Action Alert: Tell The EPA To Protect Our Air and Water

On March 13th, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued an order to indefinitely suspend enforcement actions for companies normally regulated under the Clean Air and Clean Water Acts in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. While facilities such as refineries and chemical plants continue to operate during the pandemic, they are no longer required to report when their factories discharge certain levels of pollution into the air or water.

From the order itself: "In general, the EPA does not expect to seek penalties for violations of routine compliance monitoring, integrity testing, sampling, laboratory analysis, training, and reporting or certification obligations in situations where the EPA agrees that COVID-19 was the cause of the noncompliance and the entity provides supporting documentation to the EPA upon request."

This gives a free pass to companies to pollute in violation of environmental laws for an indefinite period. This is unacceptable, especially given that many industrial hotspots are centered in already vulnerable at-risk communities.

Please take a moment to let EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler know how you feel by sending him a letter expressing your disappointment with him for relaxing industry regulations instead of safeguarding the environment and our communities.

With the impending threat of climate change and an international pandemic at our heels, it is essential that our environment and communities are safeguarded from potential risks and pollutions from industrial activity. During a time when we are already feeling the effects of climate change and witnessing an unprecedented infectious virus take over our communities, the people in the United States are counting on your agency to ensure that our air and water are safe. Our environment and communities cannot be protected from potential mishaps if industries are allowed to continue operations without enforcements of due regulation. I urge you to reverse this decision and continue to require companies to report when their factories discharge certain levels of pollution into the air or water, as mandated by the Clean Air and Clean Water Acts.
